In 2004, Chris Anderson gave a TED talk about how technology's long tail is expanding and how it relates back to marketing. As a current student who is completing a marketing minor, the video was very educational for me and still has relatable information even though it was published about 17 years ago. The Long Tail of Technology In its simplest form, Anderson describes technology's long tail as a way to make the "presumption, the observation even, that all important technologies go through four stages in their life -- at least one of the four stages, sometimes all four of the stages." He describes this thinking as the "grand unified theory of predicting the future,". Gartner Hype Curve Throughout his talk Chris describes the Gartner Hype Curve, which is as he explained it something that tracks the trajectory of a lifespan of a certain piece of technology. He uses multiple examples of the booming technology at the time like DVD, VCR and even the practically new service Netflix to further explain exactly what it accomplishes.
