Augmented Reality: How It's Changed Public Relations

sarahmartens999

The new wave of PR is here, it's an exciting new concept called Augmented Reality, AR for short. AR gives users the ability to place the digital world in your own home. From games to marketing there are so many ways PR can use Augmented Reality in their favor.

IKEA being a prime example, they have come out with an AR experience for their shoppers in a way that makes it easy and quick to find exactly what they are looking for in their home and how it might look in the spot they want. IKEA is using AR in the marketing aspect, when people think of IKEA usually their first thought is the gigantic shopping mall full of furniture and gadgets which is very overwhelming when you don't know what you're looking for. Their IKEA Place App gives customers the experience of shopping virtually and placing the pieces in their home with AR. An example from the app is below.

This example is just one of the ways AR is changing the ways companies are marketing toward their clients and using it in the Public Relations realm. There are endless possibilities and it will only expand as technology becomes more sophisticated. I look forward to the ways practitioners start to use AR in their everyday life, IKEA is a great place to start and to give other companies ideas of how to incorporate this up and coming technology within their business. AR is a really cool way to give a more personal touch to a business and a chance for companies to make personal connections with their customers, using IKEA as an example, their customers can show off their designs and inspirations while giving IKEA a look inside their home and how they used their pieces to make their interior designer wishes come true.

I look forward to seeing what AR leads to in the future, especially with Public Relations hopefully one day I can use AR in my work and have a good outcome with it like IKEA!
